HOW DOES THE DRI-ECO-NOX-HEAT WORK?

Dri-Eco-Nox-Heat introduces a continuous supply of fresh, filtered air into the home - improving indoor air quality and removing harmful air pollutants such as NO2 from car fumes and industrial processes. This technology also alleviates the build up of condensation, which can eventually lead to damp and mould growth.

Your unit is installed in the loft and draws air through its filters. Air is forced through a diffuser in the ceiling which creates a positive pressure throughout the home, eventually forcing air pollutants out through natural gaps such as windows, doors and the letterbox.

This technique, known as Positive Input Ventilation (PIV), was invented by Nuaire in 1972 and is the UK’s most popular way of improving indoor air quality and removing condensation dampness from the home. The inclusion of a Nox filter on your unit ensures that no hazardous particles can enter the home.

Your unit comes fitted with a built-in heater. This heater is not designed to warm air coming into the property, but instead tempers the fresh, filtered air entering the home to create a comfortable living environment.

 

HOW DO I OPERATE THE UNIT?

When your unit was installed, it would be have been set up to meet the requirements of your home. Unless filters need changing or the unit needs to be maintained, minimal interaction is required and you can leave the unit alone to ventilate your home trouble-free.

HOW MUCH DOES A DRI-ECO-NOX-HEAT COST TO RUN?

 

To run the unit, electrical consumption would (typically) be 6p per day.

WHAT MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED?

To maintain the optimum performance of your Dri-Eco-Nox-Heat the filters must be kept clean and clear. The light on the diffuser of your unit will let you know when filters need changing.

 

  • 2x ePM10 filters should be visually checked every 2 years and changed every 5 years at a minimum. The unit display will show the letter ‘C’ once this time has elapsed.

  • Change carbon filters every 2 years, failure to do so may impair the performance and efficiency of this unit.

 

The replacement filters will arrive in re-usable packaging with a prepaid returns label to return the used filters. These filters are then disposed of by a professional waste to energy company as our commitment to our Green Credential policy.

We recommend appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be worn during this process. Precautions may also be needed to protect the surrounding area from excess carbon residue. Please wash hands thoroughly after handling the carbon filters.

Nuaire invents Positive Input Ventilation

It was in 1972 that Nuaire invented a cure for condensation dampness in residential properties and its associated problems. Installed in over a million homes Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) - is the UK’s most popular method of low-energy whole home ventilation.

Nearly 50 years later, Nuaire’s retains its number one position in the market by continually enhancing the product and meet the ever increasing demands in the marketplace.

Fresh air is drawn through the loft by the PIV unit, filtered and passes via the ceiling diffuser, creating a positive pressure within the home forcing air pollutants out through the natural leakage gaps found in every home.

 

What are the first signs of condensation?

Fogged up and streaming windows are often the first signs of condensation before the wallpaper and paint begins to peel, black mould patches appear, and musty smells are noticed.

Condensation dampness is a common problem for both new and older homes, especially during winter months when opening windows and drying clothes outside are less practical. Without proper ventilation, the moisture we produce from everyday activities such as cooking and bathing is trapped inside the home. The moisture is then absorbed into the air where it condenses on cool surfaces such as windows, mirrors, external walls, and fabrics.

Moisture in the air travels to the coldest parts of the house so properties that have cold spots or are heated intermittently are likely to suffer with condensation dampness. With rising energy costs, many homeowners and tenants cannot afford to keep the whole property heated 24/7, meaning condensation and mould problems are growing in the UK.

If left untreated, condensation dampness can become much worse than an unattractive repair bill; it can damage our health as well as the fabric of the property. 

How can excess moisture damage the home?

 

While fogging and streaming windows, walls, and mirrors may not seem like a problem, the effects of condensation can worsen over time, penetrating the fabric of the property, furniture, and household fabrics, and even producing mould.

Because mould eats whatever it is growing on, it can permanently damage a building and its furnishings. If left unchecked, mould can eventually cause structural damage to building materials; rotting wood, disintegrating drywall, costing the property owner money for remedial work and potentially reducing a building’s value.

Damage to the drywall could result in complete replacement, especially if it becomes badly affected by mould and mildew. These fungai usually make an appearance as a cloud of little black dots around windows or in the corners of rooms, behind wardrobes or any furniture where air doesn't circulate. However, mould can grow on almost any organic material as long as there is moisture and oxygen present.

If the humidity level in a home is above the recommended guide of 60%, certain moulds can grow and flourish in just under 12 hours. If condensation is present, there’s almost certainly mould present too, and that can become a massive issue over time.

The dangers of Damp and Mould

The dangers of damp and mould spores caused by condensation are very real, and as winter approaches social housing tenants living in poorly ventilated homes will be at risk of developing or worsening a range of allergies, from asthma to rhinitis.

Faced with energy price hikes and more severe winter weather, tenants are less likely to open windows and dry clothes outside and so the damage caused by condensation remains. As autumn approaches and the temperature drops, many Registered Social Landlords will start preparing for the onslaught of tenant complaints about damp walls, condensation on windows and the appearance of black mould on fabric, clothing and wallpaper.

Condensation dampness affects both new and older properties and is much more common than you might imagine. Excess moisture is produced simply by breathing and by everyday activities like bathing, cooking, washing and drying our clothes. An average family can produce up to four pints of water per day and this moisture is absorbed into the air where it migrates through the home and condenses on cool surfaces such as windows, mirrors, wall tiles and furniture.

This humid environment is the ideal condition for mould spores to germinate and grow, and for dust mites to breed. These allergens can aggravate asthma and trigger allergic symptoms such as rhinitis and eczema, so while your property may be subjected to cosmetic damage caused by excess humidity, the health and wellbeing of your tenants will also be at risk. In short, condensation dampness is bad news for all concerned.

For many RSLs, this problem comes around every year between autumn and spring, bringing with it visits from surveyors and damp assessors, and costly repairs to the building fabric and decoration. Many will try to encourage their tenants to adopt lifestyle changes to lower the level of humidity in the property: opening windows and closing doors in moisture-producing rooms, keeping the property warm to reduce cold spots, and not drying clothes inside. In reality, as a result of fuel poverty and more extreme weather, it is often difficult to enforce these changes and when outside temperatures plummet any activities that result in a loss of heat and increased fuel bills are quickly abandoned.

So what’s the solution?

Trawling the internet for advice on tackling condensation will uncover a plethora of so-called cures, but be wary: many of these are simply short-term solutions that will mask or target only the cosmetic appearance of mould without actually dealing with the root of the problem. Anti-mould paint, dehumidifiers, cavity wall and loft insulation, draught-proofing and installing double glazing are just some of steps suggested by retailers and suppliers. Some are extremely costly, others are effective for tackling penetrating damp, but none of them will solve the condensation issue. It’s a matter of adequate ventilation. For properties badly affected by condensation dampness, the most effective solution is a whole-home ventilation strategy called Positive Input Ventilation, sometimes referred to as Positive Pressurisation or PIV.

Ventilation manufacturer, Nuaire invented the technology over 40 years ago in conjunction with the North Eastern Gas Board which sought a low-cost solution to clear condensation and humidity caused by sealed up chimneys and modern central heating systems. Today, PIV is the most popular method of whole home ventilation in the UK, being simple to install and still providing the only known cure for condensation dampness and the associated health issues caused by dust mites, mould spores and other indoor pollutants.

The PIV process involves drawing fresh air from outside into a fan located in the loft area. The air is filtered, tempered using the heat that naturally accumulates at the top of the house, and then gently pushed into the home causing positive pressurisation. By continuously supplying fresh, filtered air through the home, the moisture-laden stale air is forced out through the natural leakage points. As a result, the humidity is drastically reduced and the allergens are removed from the air creating a fresh and healthy indoor environment for tenants. Quiet and energy-efficient in their operation, Positive Input Ventilation systems can reduce the overall maintenance costs of a property by protecting the fabric and materials in the home and preventing the build-up of tell-tale signs that often trigger tenant complaints. This strategy is extremely cost effective and quick to install compared with other ventilation strategies such as installing individual extract fans in all wet rooms. This makes PIV ideally suited to repairs and maintenance projects, yet it is gaining popularity in new build homes.

Without adequate ventilation, these pollutants remain trapped inside the home where, over time, they can have a serious impact on our health. Long-term exposure a damp environment or polluted air is linked to serious health conditions including asthma, respiratory infections, lung disease and heart disease.
